Ri Yue Bing Ming (Sun & Moon Bright)
Tai Yang and Tai Yin both in temple saluting the Life Palace — day and night lit at once. Standing and wealth together, reputation and profit advancing side by side: the finest of the sun-and-moon patterns.
🔑 How It Forms
Within the Life Palace's trinity (the palace itself + the opposite palace + the two trine palaces, four in all), both Tai Yang and Tai Yin must appear, and each must reach thriving or in temple in brightness (brightness is a star's power grade in the palace it occupies; the seven steps run from strong to weak as in temple, thriving, in place, favorable, neutral, weak, fallen, and this pattern recognizes only the top two). Both stars present and both bright enough forms the pattern.

🔬 A Worked Example, Step by Step
The chart below is cast by our own engine, and the steps come from the pattern detector in that same pass — the explanation is the judgement, not a separate write-up.
- 1
Locate the Life Palace (branch Hai) as the basis for judgement.
- 2
Looking for Tai Yang and Tai Yin across the trinity of the Life Palace: all required stars are present.
- 3
Found Tai Yang across the trinity of the Life Palace.
- 4
Checking brightness: Tai Yang in temple — meets the requirement.
- 5
Found Tai Yin across the trinity of the Life Palace.
- 6
Checking brightness: Tai Yin in temple — meets the requirement.
- 7
All 3 conditions above are met, so the pattern forms.
- 8
Finally the tier: no malefics or Hua Ji disturb the trinity of the Life Palace, so the pattern stands at full strength.
✓ Result: the pattern forms at full strength
Tai Yang governs name and standing, Tai Yin governs wealth and what is kept out of sight; they are the two great light sources of the system. What this pattern tests is not whether they are there but whether they are bright — the sun and moon meeting at the Life Palace together is common, both of them landing in thriving or in-temple ground is not. The detector splits both stars present from each star's brightness into two steps because a brightness check can only run on stars already located: first confirm both are in, then measure each one's light. Why set the bar at thriving? Tai Yang lights up when it reaches the daytime positions and Tai Yin when it reaches the night ones, and with each in its proper station name and profit stop encroaching on one another; the moment either drops below in place the balance of light and dark is lost, and the old masters filed that under Ri Yue Fan Bei (Sun & Moon Reversed) instead. The test does not look at malefics and does not care whether the two stars share a palace or sit apart — it asks only that both lamps inside those four palaces burn bright enough.
🎯 Readings by Topic
Equally capable in front of the curtain and behind it; careers driven by reputation plus expertise suit best. Public office, finance, education, and culture let both rise at once.
Two income streams, visible and quiet: the main job supplies the name, the side line supplies the return. Combine motion and stillness — the sun is active income, the moon is asset income.
Firm and gentle by turns, considerate and well judged; love generally runs smoothly. Two light sources also means family and career both pull, and balance is the whole of happiness.
⚠️ When It Breaks
One luminary out of position and this is no longer shared brightness but an imbalance of light and shade. Both fallen is Ri Yue Fan Bei (Sun & Moon Reversed) and is judged separately. With Hua Ji striking one of them, either the name or the money takes damage — protect the stronger and let the weaker go.
