Tai Yang and Tai Yin both appear inside the Life Palace's trinity (the palace itself + the opposite palace + the two trine palaces, four in all), and both stars' brightness falls in the weakest two grades, weak or fallen (a star's power runs from strong to weak as in temple, thriving, in place, favorable, neutral, weak, fallen). Both must be weak; only one being weak does not form the pattern.

What this pattern tests is a double weakness: Tai Yang has run into the night positions and Tai Yin into the daytime ones, so both great light sources lose their glow at once. The detector therefore measures each star's brightness separately, and both must land in the weak or fallen grades. Note that it names those two grades rather than saying below some threshold — the middle grades neutral and favorable do not count, since the luminaries there are merely on the soft side and do not yet amount to a reversal. The structure describes light that is thin from the start: little help in the early stages, everything taking an extra stretch of endurance. It is not a verdict on a whole life. And precisely because what is measured is brightness rather than the presence of some malefic, a change of stage often borrows the light back — which is the traditional source of the advice that this pattern does best away from where it was born.
