What Is Zi Wei Dou Shu?

Zi Wei Dou Shu — literally "Purple Star Calculation" — dates back over a thousand years to the Song dynasty and was long reserved for the imperial court. It converts your lunar birth date and hour into a square chart of twelve palaces, then distributes over a hundred stars into them, with fourteen major stars carrying the most weight.

The result reads like a map rather than a formula: each palace governs one life domain, and the stars sitting in it — bright or dim, supported or clashed — describe how that domain tends to unfold. This palace-level specificity is why many readers use Zi Wei Dou Shu for concrete questions about career direction, marriage, or wealth.

Brightness and the Four Transformations

Two mechanics give the chart its nuance. First, brightness: the same star behaves differently depending on the palace branch it occupies, ranging from temple-bright — the star at full power — to fallen, where its weaknesses lead. A bright Qi Sha commands; a fallen one merely quarrels.

Second, the Four Transformations (Si Hua): each birth-year stem converts four specific stars into Hua Lu (flowing wealth), Hua Quan (authority), Hua Ke (reputation), and Hua Ji (obstruction). The Ji transformation is where a chart’s recurring lesson hides — most practitioners read it first.

Where Purple Star Astrology Comes From

Tradition attributes the system to Chen Tuan, a Taoist master of the tenth century, and its name to the Purple Star itself — the pole star around which the heavens appear to turn, borrowed as a metaphor for the emperor. For centuries the method stayed close to the Chinese court, which valued its palace-by-palace precision for questions of succession and appointment.

It reached the public far later than BaZi did, which is why Zi Wei Dou Shu retains an air of the “imperial art” in Chinese-speaking communities — and why Taiwan and Hong Kong, where the lineages continued uninterrupted, remain its strongest homes today.

Zi Wei Dou Shu vs BaZi: Which Should You Use?

The two systems are complementary. BaZi (Four Pillars) is an elemental calculus — compact, timing-oriented, strong on when to act. Zi Wei Dou Shu is a positional map — granular, domain-oriented, strong on where in life a theme will play out. A question like "which decade favors starting a business" suits BaZi; "what kind of partner suits me and what will the relationship look like" suits the Marriage Palace of a Zi Wei chart.

Why Zi Wei Dou Shu Uses the Lunar Calendar

Here is a difference that trips up newcomers: BaZi runs on the solar calendar of the twenty-four solar terms, while Zi Wei Dou Shu is cast from your lunar birth date — the month and day of the traditional moon calendar, plus the two-hour period of birth. The same birthday can therefore sit in different months across the two systems, and that is normal.
