Complete Pattern Guide
Learn the algorithms, formation conditions, and practical applications of BaZi patterns including Major, Following, Dominant, and Transformation patterns.
Bing-Xin Water Transformation
Bing combines with Xin to transform into Water. Born in Water months, the Day Master abandons Fire to follow Water.
Ding-Ren Wood Transformation
Ding combines with Ren to transform into Wood. Born in Wood months, the Day Master follows Wood nature.
Jia-Ji Earth Transformation
Jia combines with Ji to transform into Earth. Born in Earth or Fire months, the Day Master abandons Wood nature to follow Earth.
Wu-Gui Fire Transformation
Wu combines with Gui to transform into Fire. Born in Fire months, the Day Master follows Fire nature.
Yi-Geng Metal Transformation
Yi combines with Geng to transform into Metal. Born in Metal months, the Day Master abandons Wood to follow Metal.
Following Reform Pattern (Metal)
Metal-dominant pattern. Day Master is Geng/Xin metal with complete Metal gathering in branches.
Sowing & Reaping Pattern (Earth)
Earth-dominant pattern. Day Master is Wu/Ji earth with complete Earth gathering in branches.
Curving & Straight Pattern (Wood)
Wood-dominant pattern. Day Master is Jia/Yi wood with complete Wood gathering in branches.
Moistening Downward Pattern (Water)
Water-dominant pattern. Day Master is Ren/Gui water with complete Water gathering in branches.
Blazing Upward Pattern (Fire)
Fire-dominant pattern. Day Master is Bing/Ding fire with complete Fire gathering in branches.
Following Wealth Pattern
Day Master extremely weak while Wealth extremely strong, surrenders to Wealth. Indicates great wealth.
Following Children Pattern

Following Killings Pattern
Day Master extremely weak while Killings extremely strong, surrenders to Killings. Indicates great nobility.
Following Momentum Pattern
Day Master extremely weak, surrenders to dominant element(s). A special following pattern.
Monthly Blade Pattern
Monthly branch is Day Master's blade location (peak prosperity). Represents strength and strong personality.
Established Wealth Pattern

Direct Officer Pattern
When Direct Officer emerges from the monthly stem. Represents discipline, authority, and nobility.
Direct Seal Pattern
When Direct Seal emerges from monthly stem. Represents learning, nurturing, credentials, and knowledge.
Pattern Priority Order
BaZi pattern determination follows the principle of "special patterns first, regular patterns second":
💡 Logic: First check for Transformation pattern (stem combination with month support), then Dominant pattern (extremely strong Day Master), then Following pattern (extremely weak Day Master), then Prosperity pattern. Only when all special patterns fail does it fall back to the Eight Major patterns.
Introduction to Pattern System
Major Patterns
The Eight Major Patterns are the most fundamental pattern types, determined by the Ten Gods that emerge from the monthly stem.
Dominant Patterns
Dominant Patterns occur when one element is exclusively dominant, including patterns for Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
Following Patterns
Following Patterns occur when the Day Master is extremely weak and must surrender to dominant elements.
Transformation Patterns
Transformation Patterns occur when the Day Master combines with an adjacent stem, and the month supports the transformed element. Extremely rare but highly auspicious when formed.
