What Is the Spouse Star in BaZi?

Men look to Wealth, women look to Officer. Find your spouse star, see how it differs from the marriage palace, and learn how we use it in compatibility reports.

💡 Quick answer

The spouse star (配偶星) is the role in a BaZi chart that stands for your husband or wife, and one of the Ten Gods fills it. It is set from your Day Master by the Five Elements cycle and yin-yang polarity: in a man’s chart Direct Wealth is the wife star, in a woman’s chart Direct Officer is the husband star, with Indirect Wealth and Seven Killings read alongside them as secondary spouse stars.

How to Find Your Spouse Star

Every Ten God comes from one comparison: set a stem against your Day Master and ask how their elements interact and whether their polarity matches. The spouse star uses two of those relationships.

Tradition reads Indirect Wealth as the father, romantic ties, or a connection outside marriage, and Seven Killings as a forceful partner or an informal relationship. When a chart has no Direct Wealth or Direct Officer, or that star is weak, these two take over the spouse-star role. So the full rule is: men read the Wealth stars, Direct Wealth first; women read Officer and Killings, Direct Officer first.

Find your Day Master, the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar. Its row shows your spouse stars:

Men: the element you control is Wealth

Of the element your Day Master controls, the opposite polarity is Direct Wealth and the same polarity is Indirect Wealth. Direct Wealth is the formal wife star.

Women: the element controlling you is Officer

Of the element controlling your Day Master, the opposite polarity is Direct Officer and the same polarity is Seven Killings. Direct Officer is the formal husband star.

An Easy Pattern: the Five Stem Combinations

The stems pair into five combinations: Jia-Ji, Yi-Geng, Bing-Xin, Ding-Ren, and Wu-Gui. For a yang Day Master, Direct Wealth is the stem it combines with: Jia combines with Ji, and Ji is Jia’s Direct Wealth. For a yin Day Master, Direct Officer is the stem it combines with: Yi combines with Geng, and Geng is Yi’s Direct Officer. Husband and wife are literally bound together in the stems.

Spouse Star vs. Marriage Palace

A BaZi chart reads marriage along two lines. The spouse star describes the person: who they are and when they arrive. The marriage palace, your day branch, describes the life you share. Read together, they give the full picture of a chart’s marriage.

Five Layers of Reading a Spouse Star

Finding the star is step one. Whether it helps the chart, how strong it is, what it clashes with, and when the luck cycles activate it all matter more than whether it appears. We read it in this order.

1 · Revealed or hidden

A spouse star in the Heavenly Stems shows itself early and openly. One held only in the hidden stems of a branch runs quieter and later, and often waits for a luck cycle to draw it out. A Jia man with no Ji in his stems but Chou as his day branch still has Direct Wealth inside the marriage palace, since Chou holds hidden Ji.

2 · Which pillar

In the year or month pillar, the connection may come early or tie to family and work. In the day branch, star and palace coincide and the relationship sits at the center of married life. In the hour pillar, it tends to come later, or the marriage matures in middle age. These are tendencies to weigh against the whole chart.

3 · Favorable or unfavorable

When the spouse star is a favorable element, a partner tends to be a source of support. When it is unfavorable, pressure and strain show up more clearly in the relationship. This step depends on judging Day Master strength and the useful element.

4 · Clashed, combined, or controlled

Heavy Peers in a man’s chart compete for the Wealth star. Heavy Hurting Officer in a woman’s chart strikes at the Officer star. A spouse star combined away by another stem, many Wealth stars in a man’s chart, or Officer and Killings mixed in a woman’s chart all bring more choices and more change in love.

5 · When the luck cycles activate it

The natal chart says this person exists; the cycles say when they appear. Common signs are a spouse star arriving in the stem of a Luck Pillar or year, a year that combines or clashes with the day branch, and a cycle bringing the element that resolves a blocked spouse star. Read the Luck Pillar and the year together.

How We Use the Spouse Star in Compatibility Reports

That is the method. Here is how FateMaster applies it. Every conclusion in a report names the pillar and Ten God behind it, and you can ask follow-up questions to check any spouse-star reading yourself.

💬 Frequently Asked Questions

If my chart has no spouse star, will I never marry?

A chart does not support that conclusion. Check the hidden stems first, since many missing stars are simply not revealed. Then look at the luck cycles: the years a spouse star arrives are the windows for a relationship. Charts with a faint spouse star lean more on the day branch and the cycles.

Is having many spouse stars a good thing?

Not necessarily. Many Wealth stars in a man’s chart, or mixed Officer and Killings in a woman’s, traditionally mean more choices, more change, and more emotional ups and downs. The number has to be weighed against how much the Day Master can carry.

Is the spouse star the same as the Peach Blossom?

No. A Ten God fills the spouse-star role, and it describes your partner. Peach Blossom is a symbolic star describing attraction and social charm. The two can be read side by side.

Do women read only Direct Officer, or Seven Killings too?

Direct Officer comes first and Seven Killings second. If a chart has only Seven Killings, that star is the husband star. When both appear, tradition calls it mixed Officer and Killings, and the reading turns on which one has more strength and whether either is combined away or restrained.

How do I look up my own spouse star?
