🔑 How It Forms
Of the two palaces immediately before and after the Life Palace, one holds Tai Yang and the other Tai Yin (in either order), and each of those two stars must reach in place or higher in brightness (a star's power runs from strong to weak as in temple, thriving, in place, favorable, neutral, weak, fallen, and in place or above counts as well-situated ground). That forms the pattern. The brightness measured is that of the sun and moon in the two neighboring palaces, and has nothing to do with what sits in the Life Palace.

A flanking pattern looks at the Life Palace's neighbors, so this one does not ask which star occupies the Life Palace and asks only whether the palaces before and after hold Tai Yang on one side and Tai Yin on the other. Tai Yang governs standing and also the father, Tai Yin governs wealth and also the mother, and the two great light sources standing on either side make, structurally, a picture of being sheltered from both directions — hence the traditional claim of patrons arriving throughout a life. The detector adds a brightness threshold: the luminaries above all depend on being in season, and a sun and moon short of force cannot cast light even from right beside you, so both must be at in place or above. That in place is the name of a brightness grade, not a loose way of saying the star has arrived somewhere. Flanking counts only the immediately adjacent palaces, with anything further out excluded. What the pattern supplies is a floor, so that a life never falls all the way down; and the homework that comes with it is equally clear — a floor is a starting point, not a destination.

⚠️ When It Breaks
The flanking counts only when both luminaries stand on favorable ground — de, wang or miao; at miao or wang the support is fuller, and a fallen luminary does not form the pattern at all. Malefics in the flanking palaces make the patronage conditional. What this pattern least needs is a habit of living off the parents — a floor is a starting point, not a destination.
