Eight Doors

Rest Door

One of the three auspicious doors among the Eight, of the Water element with its original palace in Kan 1. It governs rest, recuperation, and audiences with benefactors — favorable for seeking wealth, negotiation, marriage, and assuming office, unfavorable for punishments and war.

In Depth

The Rest Door is one of the three auspicious doors among the Eight. It belongs to the Water element, with its original palace in Kan 1, sharing that palace with Tian Peng. Its imagery is rest, recuperation, ease, and gentle accord: in people it points to public officials, the salaried, and the mild-tempered; in affairs it signals repose, conciliation, and favor from above. Wherever the Rest Door lands, the atmosphere is genial — most favorable for audiences with benefactors, assuming office, trade and seeking wealth, marriage, settlement talks, and convalescence; grim business such as punishment, sentencing, war, or hunting runs against its nature. It is prosperous in winter, supported in autumn, resting in spring, imprisoned in summer, and dead in the earth months. When prosperous, benefactors carry real weight and plans run smoothly; when weak, the blessing is modest — safe but unadvancing. It is at home in Kan; in Qian and Dui, fed by Metal, its fortune deepens; in Kun and Gen, where Earth overcomes it, the palace restrains the door and benefactors are blocked; falling in Li, where Water overcomes Fire, the door is pressed (men po) — auspicious matters lose force and endeavors labor. In divination the door is the gateway of the matter: with the Rest Door presiding, things tend to succeed slowly, best advanced by gentle means, never by storm. Paired with auspicious stars such as Tian Xin and Tian Fu and with the Three Nobles, benefactors and blessings stack layer upon layer; under Emptiness (Kong Wang), appointments tend to shift — keep a fallback ready.

Readings by Topic

Career

Strongly favors meeting leadership, reporting, job-seeking, and assuming office: soften your bearing and patrons will gladly lift you. Civil service and state enterprises benefit most from this steady door. When prosperous, ask for the promotion outright; when weak, hold steady and wait for the opening.

Wealth

Legitimate income flows evenly — salary, rent, the long steady stream — and trade goes best with familiar faces and old customers. When prosperous, price talks and signings go smoothly; when weak, income is flat, so avoid heavy bets. For the direction of wealth, look to the palace where the Rest Door falls.

Relationships

Highly auspicious for marital harmony: matchmaking, proposals, and reconciliations all prosper. The partner is gentle-tempered, domestic, and content. For couples locked in a cold war, this is precisely the moment to sit down and talk. Setting the wedding date when the Rest Door is prosperous adds further warmth.

Health

Favors rest and recuperation: chronic conditions improve by degrees, and post-surgical recovery does best in quiet. Ailments center on the kidneys, urinary system, blood, and chills. Choose a quiet convalescent spot near water. Just out of a serious illness, don't rush back to work — take the full leave.

Travel

Journeys are smooth and unhurried — ideal for holidays, visiting family and friends, and travel to a new post. Racing on urgent business is not its strength; keep the itinerary loose. A trip by the water refreshes the spirit; dress warmly against the chill and expect no great danger.

Disputes & Lawsuits

Settle, don't fight: extend goodwill first, and benefactors will often step in to mediate. Mediation and pre-trial settlement carry high odds here. If the other side has no appetite for battle either, conceding one small step to buy a graceful exit is the smart trade.
