Eight Doors

Life Door

The Life Door belongs to yang Earth, with its original palace at Gen 8. One of the three auspicious doors, it governs vitality, profit, property, and the cultivation of health; for seeking wealth, childbirth, or audiences with the influential, meeting it is auspicious in every case.

Classical Verse

八门若遇开休生,诸事逢之皆称情。(Among the eight doors, meet Open, Rest, or Life, and every affair turns out as one wishes.)

《烟波钓叟歌 (Song of the Old Fisherman of the Misty Waves)》 · 八门吉凶 (The Fortunes of the Eight Doors)

In Depth

The Life Door belongs to yang Earth, its original palace at Gen 8 in the northeast — the very ground where winter ends and spring begins and all things germinate. It therefore presides over vitality, business, childbirth, and nurture. Its imagery covers profit, houses and landed property, margins, production, health cultivation, ways out of difficulty, and rescue; questions of money and livelihood look to this door first. As a foundational symbol, its verdict rests on the generating and controlling relations of the palace it lands in, together with seasonal strength: landing in Li 9, Fire generates Earth and its vitality is at its fullest; in Kun 2 or Gen 8 it matches its own element, steady and advancing; in Qian 6 or Dui 7, Earth generates Metal and drains away, halving its auspicious force; in Zhen 3 or Xun 4 it is controlled by Wood — the palace subdues the door and its vitality is suppressed; in Kan 1, Earth controls Water and the door is forced (men po): an auspicious door under duress, good affairs hard to complete, mostly fruitless running about after money. Seasonally, the Life Door is at its prime in the Earth months of the four seasons and supported in summer, resting and weak through autumn and winter; strong, the profit is solid; weak, thin and slow to arrive. In the hierarchy of fortune it ranks among the most auspicious, named alongside the Open Door and the Rest Door as the three auspicious doors. Caveats: when the Life Door falls into emptiness (kong wang), gains come to nothing and good news rings hollow until the void is filled; sharing a palace with auspicious stems such as Wu, Bing, or Ding adds blessing upon blessing, while pairing with Geng Metal or a baleful star makes profit-seeking laborious — read door, star, and god together.

Career

The Life Door governs livelihood and position. Landing in a strong palace, job applications tend to succeed, and those already employed can expect a raise or a new line of business to run. Push actively for substantive roles with real authority and performance stakes; if the door is forced or falls into emptiness, promotion talk stays talk — hold your current position first, then advance.

Wealth

The Life Door is the foremost door for wealth, governing regular income and operating profit; opening a business, buying property, or investing in farming, husbandry, and real estate can all pay off. In a strong palace the margins are generous; weak, they run thin — sell on volume. Sharing a palace with Wu stacks wealth upon wealth; in emptiness, paper profit resists landing in the pocket, so watch collections closely.

Relationships

The Life Door speaks of vitality and new connections. Singles have a clear chance of meeting someone through introductions or at work, and existing relationships move toward substance — engagement, buying a home, moving in together. A strong Life Door makes for practical, stable affection; when the door is forced, friction arises over practical matters such as betrothal gifts and property.

Health

The Life Door means vitality in abundance: illness inquiries usually point to a treatable, curable condition with strong powers of recovery, especially favorable for tending the spleen and stomach and for post-surgical recuperation. Strong, improvement comes quickly; weak, recovery is slow but heading the right way. If the door is empty or ridden by a baleful god, guard against relapse — do not stop medication early.

Travel

Meeting the Life Door on a journey is auspicious: the trip is safe and often tangibly rewarding, and business travel in particular tends to close deals. Head toward the Life Door's direction when traveling for profit. When the door is forced, the road brings mostly errands and hassle with diminished returns — trim the itinerary and fix a clear purpose before setting out.

Disputes & Lawsuits

In litigation the Life Door means the matter has a way out: mediation and compromise are within reach, and cases usually end in settlement or on terms favorable to you — disputes over land, housing, and division of property especially so. A strong Life Door can win substantive compensation; in emptiness, promised payouts easily become empty checks, so have everything put in writing.
