Nine Stars

Tian Peng Star

The most inauspicious of the Nine Stars, of the Water element with its original palace in Kan 1. It governs strategy, daring, and speculative risk-taking: when prosperous it can achieve extraordinary feats; when weak it signals theft and financial loss.

Classical Verse

假令水宿号天蓬,相在初冬与仲冬。(Take the Water lodge, named Tian Peng: it stands supported in early and mid-winter.)

《烟波钓叟歌 (Song of the Misty Waves Fisherman)》

In Depth

Tian Peng belongs to the Water element, with its original palace in Kan 1. In the traditional classification of the Nine Stars it ranks alongside Tian Rui as one of the two great malefics. Its imagery covers strategy, daring, ambition, and risk-taking: in people it points to the bold yet meticulous, those who dare to think and act, but also to thieves, speculators, and drifters of the underworld; in affairs it signals working in the shadows and seeking success through danger. Tian Peng is at its strongest in winter, when Water is in season, and still vigorous in autumn; it rests in spring, is imprisoned in summer, and is held in check during the earth months at the close of each season. When prosperous, it favors military maneuvers, competitive struggle, and speculative ventures, lending the power to win by surprise; when weak and out of place, its predatory side shows, indicating theft, financial loss, and dangers by water. It is strongest when it lands in the Kan palace, still workable though drained in Zhen or Xun, and greatly weakened in Kun, Gen, or the center, where Earth overcomes it. Tian Peng should never preside over celebrations such as weddings, grand openings, or construction — its malign nature seeps into them. For questions of wealth or planning, first ask whether the aim is steady gain or a gamble: profiting amid risk is this star's true character. When it shares a palace with auspicious doors or the Three Nobles, its harm is restrained and its boldness can be harnessed; when Emptiness (Kong Wang) or malign patterns pile on, keeping still and avoiding danger is the only sound course.

Readings by Topic

Career

Suited to competitive, pioneering roles — military, police, sports, and frontline sales let this star shine. When prosperous, Tian Peng fights its way to the top; when weak, it tends to cross lines and break rules, so beware losing your position to reckless bravado.

Wealth

Favors windfall gains and speculation. When prosperous, market timing is sharp and profits can be substantial; when weak, greed itself becomes the loss, with added risk of theft, fraud, and losses on the water. Steady investing is not this star's strength — knowing when to walk away matters most.

Relationships

Romance tends to begin in passion, arriving fast on shallow footing. The partner is bold and forward, but the affair may be tangled with drink and ambiguity. In marriage questions, examine the other party's character closely; combined with malign doors or patterns, deception is likely — do not rush into an engagement.

Health

Tian Peng belongs to Water and governs ailments of the kidneys, bladder, urinary system, and blood, along with ear trouble, lower-back pain, and cold-type gynecological conditions. When prosperous, illness strikes fast but responds to treatment; when weak, it drags into chronic conditions. Winter onset is most telling; avoid depleting the body with drink and indulgence.

Travel

Journeys are changeable. Guard against water hazards on river or sea routes and against thieves when traveling at night. When prosperous, long journeys succeed and movement is swift; when weak, belongings go missing en route — keep documents and wallet on your person. Travel in company and avoid deserted stretches.

Disputes & Lawsuits

Disputes typically arise from money, theft, or fraud, against an opponent who plays hard and ignores the usual rules. When Tian Peng is prosperous, taking the initiative and winning by strategy works; when weak, evidence slips away — hold steady, don't rush, and watch for the other side's maneuvering behind the scenes.
