Venus Meets Star

Heaven-plate Geng over earth-plate Yi — Tai Bai's baleful metal striking the wood of the Sun Noble. Advance meets defeat while retreat finds safety: pull back to move forward, tighten the defense, and misfortune can still be turned aside.

Formation

Heaven plate Geng + Earth plate Yi

In Depth

Tai Bai Meeting the Star forms when heaven-plate Geng sits over earth-plate Yi. Geng is Tai Bai, the baleful metal, governing obstruction, punishment, and strife; Yi is the Sun Noble, Yin Wood, governing vitality and the grace of benefactors. When Geng Metal descends from the heaven plate onto Yi Wood, the metal is strong and the wood suffers; the noble star's qi is pinned beneath the baleful metal — hence the name. The pattern's subtlety lies between control and union: Geng and Yi form one of the five stem unions, so the baleful metal and the noble wood are entangled — advance and you run onto the blade, withdraw and you receive the union's harmony. The old verdict compresses this into six characters: retreat brings fortune, advance brings harm. In severity it belongs to the inauspicious patterns that leave a way out: it does not portend sudden disaster but a taboo of direction. Every act of attack, expansion, or forcing meets a setback, while every act of contraction, defense, or concession goes smoothly. For travelers it favors returning over setting out; for ventures, holding over attacking. With auspicious doors and stars, modest gains are possible even in retreat; with inauspicious doors, even the line of retreat must be chosen with care — steadiness above all. In judgment, distinguish it from Yi over Geng, the Sun Noble Punished: there the quarrel and resentment are already formed; here the choice between advance and retreat still lies before you. Under this pattern, make the word retreat work for you — cutting losses, pulling back, yielding to preserve the whole — and it becomes the most active strategy of all.

Career

Defend, don't attack: job-hopping, contested promotions, and volunteering for battles mostly hit walls, while stepping back to cultivate your current post wins recognition. If you are caught in a rivalry, ceding the empty title to keep the real benefit is the smart play — endure the moment and the horizon widens.

Wealth

Reduce positions rather than add to them: expansionary moves now tend to end in loss. Cutting losses and banking gains is the theme; conceding a little in negotiation can save the deal. Protecting principal beats chasing returns by a wide margin.

Relationships

Relentless pursuit only pushes the other person further away; softness and breathing room open the turn. In a quarrel, the one who steps back first — who apologizes first — gains. If you are often apart, steady your own footing before pressing for the next stage.

Health

The signal is moderation: high-intensity training, aggressive weight loss, and soldiering on while sick all invite trouble. Scale down, rest, and progress gradually. Watch the liver, gallbladder, and sinews, and guard against injury; keep surgical plans conservative.

Travel

Long journeys meet friction — delays, rerouting, and sudden changes are likely. Postpone if you can; when blocked mid-route, don't force the passage — turning back or detouring is safer. Return trips, by contrast, go smoothly: this pattern favors homecoming over setting out.

Disputes & Lawsuits

The attacking party fares badly: piling on claims and widening the front leads to passivity. Trade settlement, withdrawal, or a narrowed dispute for real benefit. If the other side presses hard, hold steady within procedure — outlasting beats outfighting.
