Wu Qu and Tan Lang fall into one and the same palace (in the same palace, meaning both stars are in one palace), that palace is the Life Palace, and the Life Palace must lie in the Chou or the Wei branch. That forms the pattern.

Chou and Wei are the only landing places for this pattern, and the reason lies in the structure of the chart: Wu Qu governs hard work and money, Tan Lang governs desire and opportunity, and these two stars share a palace only at Chou and Wei, both of which belong to the four storehouses (Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei, the places of keeping in this system) — good things are sealed into storage first, which is the source of the saying that this pattern makes nothing early and a great deal late. So the detector checks only three things: whether both stars are in the Life Palace, whether they share the palace, and whether the Life Palace is at Chou or Wei. It measures no brightness and requires no lucky stars. Keep the same palace and being met across the trinity apart: met across the trinity means shining in from a trine or the opposite palace, which this pattern does not accept — the two must genuinely land in one palace. As for how early or late the rise comes, that depends on which major cycle and year the chart is running, and lies outside the question of whether the pattern forms.
