Wu Qu guards the Life Palace, the Life Palace lies in one of the four branches Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei, and Wu Qu's brightness in that palace reaches thriving or higher (a star's power runs from strong to weak through seven grades: in temple, thriving, in place, favorable, neutral, weak, fallen). On top of that, the Life Palace's trinity (the palace itself + the opposite palace + the two trine palaces, four in all) must satisfy either one of the following: it shows any one of the six lucky stars Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Kui, Tian Yue, Wen Chang, Wen Qu; or it shows Hua Lu or Hua Quan (the Four Transformations are marks produced when the heavenly stem of the birth year activates a star, in four kinds — Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, Hua Ji).

Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei are called the four storehouses in this system, places of keeping, and Wu Qu is at its strongest there — its hardness has somewhere to settle instead of turning into sheer force — so branch and brightness are checked together and neither alone counts as holding good ground. The second step checks for the commander's tally: the Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Kui, Tian Yue, Wen Chang and Wen Qu route supplies support, the Hua Lu and Hua Quan route supplies money and authority, and the detector accepts either one without demanding both. A Wu Qu in temple with an entirely empty trinity is a general with no troops: the force is there but the pattern does not stand.
