Ji Xiang Li Ming (Pole Star at Noon)
Zi Wei alone in the Wu branch at the Life Palace — the emperor star arrives at the place of light. Free of malefics it marks great distinction, and the classics rank it at the top.
🔑 How It Forms
Zi Wei sits in the Life Palace itself and the Life Palace lies in the Wu branch; at the same time the Life Palace must contain none of Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong, Di Jie (the first four together are the four malefics, the last two the voids). Both conditions met together form the pattern. The malefics are checked inside the Life Palace only — ones sitting in the opposite palace or a trine palace fall outside the test.

🔬 A Worked Example, Step by Step
The chart below is cast by our own engine, and the steps come from the pattern detector in that same pass — the explanation is the judgement, not a separate write-up.
- 1
Locate the Life Palace (branch Wu) as the basis for judgement.
- 2
This pattern requires the palace to sit at Wu; the Life Palace is at Wu — condition met.
- 3
Found Zi Wei in the Life Palace.
- 4
Confirming that Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong and Di Jie do not appear in the Life Palace — their absence is exactly what this pattern requires.
- 5
All 2 conditions above are met, so the pattern forms.
- 6
Finally the tier: no malefics or Hua Ji disturb the trinity of the Life Palace, so the pattern stands at full strength.
✓ Result: the pattern forms at full strength
Among the eight trigrams the Wu branch belongs to Li, the place of the sun at noon, so the emperor star arriving here is the sovereign taking his seat in the main hall — which is why this pattern recognizes Wu alone; other branches, however good, go by other names. It is one of the few patterns that writes malefics into the forming conditions: Zi Wei at Wu is already bright, exposed and unshielded, and the moment Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing or the voids share that palace the emperor is checked on the spot, so the old masters simply ruled the pattern unformed. Note the scope: those six malefics are checked in the Life Palace and nowhere else. If they land in the opposite palace or a trine palace the test still passes, and their effect becomes a question of grade after the pattern has formed. Zi Wei at Wu usually sits alone, and the final quality still depends on what the trinity brings in — but that no longer decides whether the pattern stands.
🎯 Readings by Topic
Tracks where the title is real: public office, senior posts in name-brand firms, professional authority. Standing comes first and profit follows; the worst fit is a seat without a legitimate mandate.
Money follows rank — position is the printing press. Chasing profit directly costs this pattern its poise; earning through reputation is the proper road.
Pride runs very high: this chart answers to respect and never to pressure. Give the emperor star its due and it repays in responsibility.
⚠️ When It Breaks
Any of Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, or Ling Xing and the pattern does not form; a constrained emperor star turns instead to isolation and wasted effort. Without Zuo Fu and You Bi it is a lone sovereign on the throne — reputation exceeding substance — and the wiser course is to build a life on expertise rather than fight for rank.
