The Life Palace itself must hold a star carrying the birth-year Hua Ke (the Four Transformations are the marks that the heavenly stem of the birth year stamps onto four stars: Hua Lu governs income, Hua Quan governs voice, Hua Ke governs reputation and success in examinations, Hua Ji governs obstruction). At the same time the Life Palace's trinity (the palace itself + the opposite palace + the two trine palaces, four in all) must show both the Hua Quan and the Hua Lu marks. Both conditions met together form the pattern.

This pattern is built from the same materials as San Qi Jia Hui (Three Treasures) — the three favorable transformations Hua Lu, Hua Quan and Hua Ke — and differs entirely in seating. San Qi Jia Hui asks only that all three enter the trinity; Jia Di Deng Yong (Top of the List) singles out Hua Ke and requires it to sit in the Life Palace itself, with Quan and Lu falling back to the trinity in support, which states the order: first take the honor, then take power and money. The test therefore runs in two steps whose ranges differ — the first looks at the Life Palace alone, the second widens to the four palaces — and that difference in range is what readers miss most often. Why must Hua Ke sit in the Life Palace in person? Hua Ke governs reputation, review and examination luck, and having it at the Life Palace writes an advantage at being graded into the native chart itself, so every gate in life that involves a test, a promotion board or a defense pays a dividend. Whether Hua Ji is also in the trinity is not checked, and belongs to the questions of what breaks the pattern and what to watch for.
