The logic of this test is inverted: other patterns check for what is there, this one checks for what is missing. Zi Wei is the emperor star, and the height of the pattern was never decided by the star itself but by who is standing at court — so the second step confirms that neither Zuo Fu nor You Bi is anywhere in the trinity. Only when they cannot be found does the pattern form.
