🔑 How It Forms
Wen Chang and Wen Qu occupy the palaces immediately before and after the Life Palace, one on each side, with the Life Palace in between (this is called flanking, and it does not matter which star comes first). That forms the pattern. The test examines only those two palaces: what star sits in the Life Palace itself, and what shines in from the opposite palace or a trine palace, are outside its scope.

Huo Xing and Di Jie
Wen Chang is the orthodox literary star, governing study and documents; Wen Qu is the unorthodox one, governing eloquence and artistic gifts. The two enclosing the Life Palace front and back take the image of literary air all around, working by slow infusion. Flanking and being met across the trinity are different structures: a star met across the trinity shines in from the opposite or a trine palace and shows its force outwardly, while a flanking star is pressed against both sides of the Life Palace and soaks its force inward. So this pattern governs disposition and grounding rather than public literary fame. The detector examines only the two positions one palace forward and one palace back, in either order, and does not require the stars to be in temple. Wen Chang and Wen Qu form this arrangement most easily when the Life Palace is at Chou or Wei, but the test does not pin the branch: any Life Palace that ends up flanked counts.
