Zuo Gui Xiang Gui (Seated in Nobility)
Tian Kui and Tian Yue, one at the Life Palace and one opposite — seated in nobility and facing it. Rescue in every crisis and introductions at every turn: the signature pattern of patronage.
🔑 How It Forms
Within the Life Palace's trinity (the palace itself + the opposite palace + the two trine palaces, four in all), both benefactor stars Tian Kui and Tian Yue must appear. That forms the pattern. It does not matter which of the four palaces each falls in — one seated in the Life Palace and one in the opposite palace is the classic seated-in-nobility-and-facing-nobility arrangement, but both sitting in trine palaces counts just as well. No brightness threshold applies, and the void is not checked.
📜 Classical Verse
Seated in nobility, facing nobility: every misfortune finds its rescue.

🔬 A Worked Example, Step by Step
The chart below is cast by our own engine, and the steps come from the pattern detector in that same pass — the explanation is the judgement, not a separate write-up.
- 1
Locate the Life Palace (branch Si) as the basis for judgement.
- 2
Looking for Tian Kui and Tian Yue across the trinity of the Life Palace: all required stars are present.
- 3
Finally the tier: no malefics or Hua Ji disturb the trinity of the Life Palace, so the pattern stands at full strength.
✓ Result: the pattern forms at full strength
Tian Kui and Tian Yue together are the Tian Yi benefactors, the pair in this system whose job is the helping hand: Tian Kui is the yang benefactor and governs promotion in the open, the good teacher at an exam and the mentor at work; Tian Yue is the yin benefactor and governs help from out of sight, the hand that appears at a hard moment. The pattern tests for both because a network of patronage only closes when it has an open half and a hidden half; one alone is thin. The seated in the name refers to a benefactor star in the Life Palace itself and the facing to one shining in from the opposite palace, the neatest arrangement the old masters could name; the detector relaxes this to the four palaces of the trinity, because a benefactor arriving from a trine palace delivers the same force and real charts need not be forced into that symmetry. Whether Tian Kui and Tian Yue fall into the void is not checked, and neither is which major star they share a palace with; both affect the quality of the patronage without affecting whether the pattern stands.
🎯 Readings by Topic
Opportunities arrive through introductions, so cultivating elders and mentors is cultivating the career itself. Following the right person matters more than picking the right project.
Financial routes tend to open on a patron's tip. Keeping promises and honoring obligations is the only way to maintain the vein.
Marriages are often arranged through elders, teachers, or friends, and trouble afterward tends to resolve — the household has patrons of its own. Say the thank-you out loud; that is what keeps the chain unbroken.
⚠️ When It Breaks
Tian Kui and Tian Yue in the Void discount the patronage. Waiting for patrons instead of working is the great waste of this pattern — patrons only ferry those already swimming. From middle age onward, turn around and be someone else's patron; that is how the blessing continues.
