The year stem is the sovereign of the year, presiding over the whole year's fortunes, and in the chart it also stands for elders, superiors, and officialdom — the weightiest figures of all; Geng is Tai Bai's baleful metal, whose nature is to bar and obstruct. When Heaven-Plate Geng lands on the palace of the Earth-Plate year stem, baleful metal presses upon the year's sovereign: this is Sui Ge, the Year Obstruction. Geng upon the year, month, day, or hour stem each forms an obstruction — 'worse still when it meets the year, month, day, or hour,' as the verse says — and the Year Obstruction heads the four: its affairs are the largest, its span the longest. For anything involving official approval or weighty family affairs, leave ample time under this pattern, and never stake everything on a single throw.
