Self-Punishment in Prison

Xin is the deity of the Heavenly Prison, governing punishment and fault; Ji is the Earth Door, ground of shadow and low concealment. With heaven-plate Xin over earth-plate Ji, the prison deity sinks into the Earth Door — like walking into a cell of one's own accord — and carries the nature of self-punishment besides; the pattern is called Entering Prison in Self-Punishment. It forms on two counts: first, Ji earth generates Xin metal, and what looks like nourishment is shadowed soil feeding the metal of punishment — what it raises is the root of calamity; second, Xin atop Ji is the prison deity dropped into low darkness, self-trapped and self-bound, so the harm erupts chiefly from within. The classical judgments — servants betray their master, and there is intent to harm — translate today into subordinates, assistants, and close confidants turning traitor or scheming behind one's back. The misfortune is of the trouble-within-the-walls kind: no waves show on the surface while the damage ferments inside, and when it breaks it is nearly impossible to guard against. Read the host palace: in Kun or Gen, where earth flourishes, the shadowed qi thickens and the internal threat deepens; in the wood palaces Zhen and Xun, wood overcomes Ji earth and the hidden scheme stands a chance of exposure. With the three auspicious doors the internal threat is still a seedling, and prompt housecleaning averts real damage; pressed by inauspicious doors, the betrayal has already taken shape. In emptiness, the scheming amounts mostly to slander — wounding to pride but not to the foundations. For questions of hiring, partnership, or household under this pattern, the core move is an internal audit: tighten the books, the permissions, the keys, the passwords one by one, and keep even trusted confidants inside a system of checks. That is how the hidden harm is pinched off at the sprout.
