Eight Gods

Black Tortoise

One of the Eight Gods, of the Water element. Xuan Wu is the deity of shadow, deception, and theft, governing thieves, fraud, disappearances, and clandestine affairs; it also resonates with strategy and the occult arts. Wherever it lands, guard against theft and schemes in the dark.

In Depth

Xuan Wu (the Dark Warrior) is one of the Eight Gods of Qimen, of the Water element, dwelling in the shadowed North — the deity of murkiness, deception, and theft. Some rotating-plate schools place Zhu Que (the Vermilion Bird) here, governing gossip and documents, but the common plate uses Xuan Wu. Xuan Wu governs thieves, stealing, deception, forgery, disappearance, and flight, as well as clandestine liaisons and backroom deals — anything conducted in the dark and meant to stay hidden falls under it. Its positive imagery covers strategy, planning, occult studies, waterworks, and aquatic trades. To judge fortune, look at strength and combination: a flourishing Xuan Wu with inauspicious doors and patterns means theft and fraud, leaked secrets, and someone working against you in the shadows; with auspicious doors and stars in a well-placed palace, it means superior strategy and quiet gains, and intelligence, research, and occult professions actually put it to use. Xuan Wu flourishes in winter, when Water reigns and its shadowy power peaks; landing in an Earth palace and overcome, its tricks find no purchase. Points to note: for lost items and theft prevention, Xuan Wu's palace fixes the direction and the thief's trail; Xuan Wu with the star Tian Peng, or with Gui added, stacks the imagery of theft — watch valuables and papers especially closely. With Void, the scam is mostly bluster and dissolves once seen through. Whenever Xuan Wu appears, verify contracts, transfers, and handovers of money face to face, and stay away from backchannel dealings.

Readings by Topic

Career

With Xuan Wu in the palace the office runs with undercurrents — whispered words, stolen credit, little reports passed behind your back. In job changes and interviews, don't count on verbal promises: get salary and grade into the contract. Those in planning, intelligence, or research work find it a sign of quick wits and quiet effectiveness instead.

Wealth

Xuan Wu governs hidden drains and fraud. In money matters, guard against scams, cooked books, and absconding funds — pass on any investment whose money trail you cannot see clearly. Keep wallets and papers safe from theft and loss. In aquatic products, logistics, and the nighttime economy, a flourishing Xuan Wu means nimble income streams instead.

Relationships

Xuan Wu in the palace of love means ambiguity, concealment, and deceit — one partner harbors secrets or an old flame not fully extinguished. In marriage readings, watch for a third party moving in the shadows. Rather than suspicion and cold war, put the doubts on the table face to face; the longer it drags, the murkier it gets.

Health

Xuan Wu is Water, corresponding to the kidneys, bladder, and urogenital system, and also to the blood and endocrine function. In illness readings the cause lies hidden, often with a lesion that eludes the first round of tests — order another round. Delaying or dodging the doctor only lets a hidden ailment grow.

Travel

With Xuan Wu in the palace, travel calls for vigilance against theft and fraud: mind your belongings at stations and in crowds, and ignore strangers' pitches. Night journeys risk losing the way — download offline maps in advance. For itineraries near water, watch the weather and skip wild swimming and fishing.

Disputes & Lawsuits

Xuan Wu governs the murky. Lawsuits under it often involve fraud, theft, or concealed assets; the other side's testimony contains falsehoods, and key evidence may be hidden away. Preserve evidence early and apply to have records produced — and have your own money flows fully accounted for, lest they be turned against you.
