Tai Yin sits in the Life Palace itself, the Life Palace lies in the Hai branch, and Tai Yin's brightness reaches in temple (brightness is a star's power grade in the palace it occupies; the seven steps run from strong to weak as in temple, thriving, in place, favorable, neutral, weak, fallen, and this pattern recognizes only the strongest of them, in temple). All three conditions met together form the pattern. The test looks at the Life Palace alone, asking nothing about the trinity and nothing about day or night birth.

The Hai branch was anciently called the Gate of Heaven, the quarter of deep night, and Tai Yin here is the full moon riding high — which is why this pattern recognizes Hai alone. The detector sets the brightness bar at in temple rather than thriving, one notch stricter than most patterns: Tai Yin is already in temple at Hai, so using the highest grade amounts to requiring a moon that is perfectly full. Tai Yin must also sit in the Life Palace in person; if it stands in the opposite palace and shines in across the trinity, the pattern does not apply even at full brightness, because what is being taken here is the image of the moon hung at the Gate of Heaven — a matter of position, not of illumination. The old books downgrade day births and say Huo Xing or Ling Xing dulls the pattern; the detector checks neither, as those belong to questions of grade and of what breaks the pattern once it has formed.
