🔑 How It Forms
Tian Xiang guards the Life Palace, and the two palaces immediately before and after the Life Palace form a flank: one of them holds Qing Yang (a malefic, anciently called the punishment), the other holds a star carrying Hua Ji (Hua Ji is one of the Four Transformations, produced when the heavenly stem of the birth year activates a star, and it governs obstruction). It does not matter which side carries the blade and which the obstruction. The anchor palace is the Life Palace only; other palaces being flanked lie outside this rule.

Lu Cun, Wen Chang and Zuo Fu
Tian Xiang is the seal star, handling authorization, credit and the stamping of documents. It takes no transformation of its own (the birth-year stem never turns it into Lu, Quan, Ke or Ji), so its situation depends almost entirely on its neighbors — which is why this pattern, like Cai Yin Jia Yin (Wealth & Shelter Flank), does not examine Tian Xiang at all and looks only at the palaces before and after the Life Palace. Qing Yang on one side brings pressure and injury, Hua Ji on the other brings obstruction and entanglement, and with the seal pinned from both ends the typical picture is a post handed over without the authority, work you must answer for without any say. Flanking counts only the two palaces directly abutting the Life Palace; a star one palace further out, however fierce, does not count, and that is the step readers most often get wrong. The only difference from Cai Yin Jia Yin is whether the two neighbors are Lu and Liang or blade and obstruction, so verify palace by palace before ruling. What is flanked is a palace, not a life: once the cycle moves past this stretch, the structural pressure loosens of its own accord.

A flanking pattern holds only with the two immediately adjacent palaces; a palace further out does not count. When the cycle moves out of the flanked ground the shackles loosen — this is not a life sentence. It is a hair's breadth from Cai Yin Jia Yin (Wealth & Shelter Flank), so verify whether the neighbors are Lu or Ji before judging.
