🔑 How It Forms
Within the Life Palace's trinity (the palace itself + the opposite palace + the two trine palaces, four in all) there must be Tian Fu, and Tian Fu's brightness must reach thriving or in temple (brightness is a star's power grade in the palace it occupies, running from strong to weak through seven steps — in temple, thriving, in place, favorable, neutral, weak, fallen — of which thriving and in temple are the top two). Inside that same range Lu must also appear: either the star Lu Cun itself, or any star carrying the birth-year Hua Lu (Hua Lu = the mark of income that the heavenly stem of the birth year stamps onto a star). Either one will do. Both conditions met together form the pattern.

Tian Fu is the treasury, and a storehouse is only worth something if there is grain inside, so the test splits into storehouse and grain. First confirm that Tian Fu has entered the trinity and is bright enough — a fallen, feeble storehouse could not hold anything in the first place. Then confirm that Lu has arrived. The second step offers two routes, and either alone suffices. Lu Cun is a physical star whose position is set by the heavenly stem of the birth year alone and stays fixed for life. Hua Lu is not a star but a mark that same stem stamps onto one of the major stars; wherever that star sits, Hua Lu goes with it. The two are different in kind yet both count as seeing Lu, which is why the detector asks for one of the two rather than both. Tian Fu with no Lu fails the test — the old books call that arrangement an empty treasury.

No Lu means an empty storehouse and the Void stars mean a broken one; neither forms the pattern. Tian Fu meeting Tian Yao or Yin Sha drew accusations of guile in the old books — read today as a warning to watch for quiet leakage and for money lent on friendship.
