Qi Sha in the Yin, Shen, Zi, or Wu branch at the Life Palace, meeting Zi Wei and Tian Fu — the general star salutes the Dipper. Commanding authority and great achievement: the first pattern of martial distinction.
🔑 How It Forms
Qi Sha sits in the Life Palace itself, the Life Palace lies in one of the four branches Yin, Shen, Zi, Wu, and Qi Sha's brightness reaches thriving or in temple (brightness is a star's power grade in the palace it occupies; in temple is the strongest, thriving the next). Then look through the Life Palace's trinity (the palace itself + the opposite palace + the two trine palaces, four in all) for Zi Wei or Tian Fu — either one of the two is enough. The two routes meet differently: with the Life Palace at Yin or Shen the opposite palace holds Zi Wei and Tian Fu in the same palace, so both are met, which the classics call saluting the Dipper (facing the imperial seat of the Northern Dipper); with the Life Palace at Zi or Wu the opposite palace holds Wu Qu and Tian Fu, so only Tian Fu is met and Zi Wei is absent, which the classics call gazing up at the Dipper. Both routes count as forming the pattern.

The test has two steps, and the second is the one most often misread. Step one pins the branch: Qi Sha must be at Yin, Shen, Zi or Wu, because those are the only four branches where Qi Sha is in temple and the general star has troops to lead. Step two searches the trinity — and note that it reads 'meets Zi Wei or Tian Fu', not both. With the Life Palace at Yin or Shen the opposite palace happens to hold Zi Wei and Tian Fu together, so both are met: the classics call this saluting the Dipper. With the Life Palace at Zi or Wu the opposite palace holds Wu Qu and Tian Fu, so only Tian Fu is met and Zi Wei never appears: gazing up at the Dipper. Both count as forming the pattern, and they differ only in the rank of the salute. If neither star is met, this is just Qi Sha standing guard alone with nowhere to send its force, and the pattern does not form.
