Red Phoenix Falls into River

Ding fire, the Vermilion Bird, is doused by Gui water — a bird plunging into the river. Documents breed quarrels and messages sink without reply; most inauspicious for readings about information, litigation, and anything sent or delivered.

Formation

Heaven plate Ding + Earth plate Gui

Classical Verse

六癸加丁蛇夭矫,六丁加癸雀投江。六乙加辛龙逃走,六辛加乙虎猖狂。请观四者是凶神,百事逢之莫措手。(When Gui rides on Ding, the Snake writhes; when Ding rides on Gui, the Bird plunges into the river. When Yi rides on Xin, the Dragon flees; when Xin rides on Yi, the Tiger runs wild. Behold these four — baleful spirits all; whatever the affair that meets them, stay your hand.)

《烟波钓叟歌 (Song of the Old Angler of the Misty Waves)》

In Depth

Vermilion Bird Plunges into the River forms when heaven-plate Ding sits over earth-plate Gui. Ding is the Vermilion Bird, governing documents, speech, and messages; Gui is the Heavenly Net, water of the utmost yin. Gui water overcomes Ding fire: the Vermilion Bird's flame falls into the river and is snuffed at once — hence documents breed trouble and messages drown. The Song of the Old Angler of the Misty Waves ranks it with Teng She Writhing, Azure Dragon Fleeing, and White Tiger Rampant as the four baleful spirits, warning that in all affairs that meet them, one can do nothing. The pattern's logic lies in the totality of water quenching fire: Ding is yin fire, Gui yin water — yin striking yin, the kill is silent, and things go wrong in the dark: the letter goes out and no reply comes; words spoken arrive distorted; the file is submitted and vanishes like a stone in the sea. The pattern is baleful, and its harm is twofold — sinking and distortion: messages drown, with replies hoped for and never given; and writing invites disaster, quarrels rising out of documents. In readings about the missing, word is hard to come by; in contracts and pleadings, watch for clauses twisted against you. As for gradations: with baleful doors the harm compounds, and document trouble can escalate into legal trouble; with auspicious doors the quarrels still come but can be cleared up. If the palace meets Emptiness (Kong Wang), the accusations are mostly empty talk; when Gui water is out of season in its palace, news is late but not lost. Three precautions: say the important things face to face, and leave few written handles; keep copies of key documents and send them by traceable channels; when a reply fails to come, check the intermediate links before jumping to conclusions.

Readings by Topic

Career

Beware written material turning against you: email phrasing, report figures, and chat logs can all be quoted out of context. Deliver important updates in person and keep the written version as a private record. Readings about transfers or applications usually mean the request goes in and nothing comes back — find another channel or refile later.

Wealth

Watch for errors in instruments, transfers that go astray, and traps buried in contract clauses. Online transactions and remittances deserve double and triple checking. In debt-collection readings the other side pleads never received, never knew; keep every receipt and use traceable channels to protect the principal.

Relationships

Messages drown and contact frays: texts go unanswered, explanations go unheard, and misunderstandings grow out of written words. Long-distance love fares worst under this pattern — the more the bond leans on text, the colder it runs. Say what matters face to face; asked about the other's feelings, the answer is usually already cold — stop casting stones into the water.

Health

The illness lies in heart and kidney out of communion, water and fire at war: watch for palpitations, urinary complaints, and low spirits. Test reports are prone to delay or error — when in doubt, re-test elsewhere. The body's signals are sunk underwater; go looking for them actively rather than waiting for symptoms to shout.

Travel

Guard against hazards on the water — boats, and driving in rain, call for extra care. Contact breaks easily en route, so fix a check-in routine before setting out. In readings about someone far away, word is hard to get through for now: usually a lost connection, with the person most likely safe.

Disputes & Lawsuits

Documents breeding quarrels is this pattern's core image: the case arises from paperwork, evidence sinks, testimony wavers. Guard your own files against loss and tampering — keep duplicates of everything. Asked about the outcome, expect drawn-out silence; do not initiate suit — settle and cut the loss.
