Combined Stems, Snake Punished

Heaven-plate Ren over earth-plate Ding: Ding and Ren combine as stems, yet the Ren snake carries punishment — affection entwined with entanglement. Documents drag one another along, benefactors withhold what they know, men fare well while women fare poorly; a neutral pattern whose outcome rests entirely on door and star.

In Depth

Stem Combination, Snake Punishment refers to heaven-plate Ren over earth-plate Ding. Ding and Ren form one of the five stem combinations, which in principle signifies harmony and mutual affection; but Ren is the coiling snake, so the combining carries entanglement, and Ding fire sits on ground where Ren water restrains it — a union under constraint, hence the name. The classical reading: documents drag one another along — contracts, notes, and certificates form interlocking chains, one link hooked into the next; benefactors conceal their knowledge — those able to help understand the situation but keep it to themselves; and in the same matter, a male querent leans toward good fortune while a female querent leans toward ill. Structurally, combination and punishment coexist. The five-combination lends the pattern adhesive force: matters are easy to negotiate, easy to sign. The punishment and restraint plant hidden nails: the very clauses agreed upon often conceal the seeds of future entanglement. In grade it is a neutral pattern, able to turn either way, decided wholly by the door and star of its palace: with the Open Door, Rest Door, or Life Door and auspicious stars, the combining force prevails and documentary matters can succeed; with inauspicious doors and stars, the punishing entanglement prevails and one's own signature becomes a weapon in another's hand. Caveats: under this pattern, oral promises deserve the least trust of all — every cooperation must be committed to paper and reviewed clause by clause. If Ding falls into Emptiness, the combining force comes to nothing and agreed matters are reneged upon. A woman asking on any matter under this pattern should keep an extra line of retreat and have major contracts reviewed by someone qualified.

Readings by Topic

Career

Job opportunities come through personal introductions and can be secured, but employment contracts and non-compete clauses may hide traps — read every word before signing. Male job-seekers fare relatively smoothly under this pattern; women should treat oral promises as unreliable and insist on everything in writing.

Wealth

Wealth comes through partnerships and contracts — and leaks away through them too. Deals can close, but obligations buried in the clauses may later become bleeding points. Lending, advancing funds, and guarantees demand particular caution: have a third party review the documents, and never stand guarantee out of friendship.

Relationships

The Ding-Ren combination signifies mutual affection: romance can succeed, and admirers are not lacking. But the snake punishment signifies entanglement — beware old flames resurfacing and ambiguous, unresolved attachments. Men fare well in love under this pattern; women should watch for partners concealing a marital history or their finances, and verify before committing.

Health

Health is steady with an undercurrent of concern: urinary issues, gynecological matters, restless heart-fire, and insomnia predominate, and women especially should schedule a gynecological examination. Keep medical records and lab reports complete — they matter when transferring care or changing doctors.

Travel

The trip can proceed, but documents — tickets, visas, identity papers — are prone to slip-ups; verify every expiry date item by item before departure. In group travel, beware companions changing plans midway. Men travel relatively smoothly; women should travel accompanied and avoid going out alone at night.

Disputes & Lawsuits

Documents dragging one another along is this pattern's core image: lawsuits arise from contracts, notes, and written instruments, with voluminous files and slow procedure. A benefactor can help but will not volunteer — seek them out sincerely and ask. Written evidence is king; spoken words cannot be relied upon.
