Po Jun guards the Life Palace, the Life Palace lies in the Zi or the Wu branch, and Po Jun's brightness there must reach the highest grade, in temple (a star's power runs from strong to weak through seven grades: in temple, thriving, in place, favorable, neutral, weak, fallen). At the same time neither Wen Chang nor Wen Qu may appear in the Life Palace — either one of them sharing the palace with Po Jun means the pattern does not form.

This pattern has a positive gate and a negative one: the positive checks whether Po Jun is in temple at Zi or Wu, the negative checks whether Wen Chang or Wen Qu is crowded into the Life Palace as well. Po Jun governs tearing down and rebuilding, and in temple that fierceness is usable fighting strength; Wen Chang and Wen Qu govern refinement and polish, and the old masters held that soft letters and hard arms in one palace check each other into indecision, so at this step the detector uses a must-not-appear exclusion — the exact opposite of the must-be-found conditions elsewhere. Note that the search for Wen Chang and Wen Qu covers the Life Palace only; the two shining in from across the trinity do not affect whether the pattern forms. Po Jun outside Zi and Wu still has the power to break and build, but without the boost of being in temple, and does not enter this pattern.

Po Jun's worst company is Wen Chang and Wen Qu in the same palace — the classics called it a grave in the water, fierceness meeting literary softness and losing the ability to advance or retreat. With malefics, the breaking succeeds and the building does not. Impulse is the valiant star's one fatal flaw: on anything large, wait three days before swinging the hammer.
