Zi Wei and Tan Lang fall into one and the same palace (in the same palace) and guard the Life Palace. That forms the pattern. The test does not restrict which branch the Life Palace lies in, and does not separately check for the minor romance stars such as Xian Chi, Tian Yao and Hong Luan.

The emperor in the name is Zi Wei, and the blossom is Tan Lang — what this pattern tests is the star of desire and the emperor star packed into one palace. The detector checks only the conjunction and does not restrict the branch, so its scope is wider than Ji Ju Mao You (Pole Star Adrift): when Zi Wei and Tan Lang share a palace and it happens to be Mao or You, both names apply at once, which is not double-counting — one emphasizes the wavering of will that the branch brings, the other the question of which star is host and which is guest. Zi Wei cares most about dignity and structure, Tan Lang most about enjoyment and opportunity, and with them together the poise and the charm come ready-made; the risk is that comfort and admiration discount, layer by layer, the things that ought to have been accomplished. Its point of adjustment has never been abstinence but ambition: so long as the emperor star still has something it means to achieve, the blossom is only ornament.
