Tai Yang sits in the Life Palace itself, the Life Palace lies in the Mao branch, and Tai Yang's brightness reaches thriving or in temple (brightness is a star's power grade in the palace it occupies; in temple is the strongest, thriving the next). All three conditions met together form the pattern. The test examines the Life Palace alone: it asks nothing about what shines in from other palaces and does not check for malefics.
