Ma Tou Dai Jian (Blade at the Horse Head)

The Life Palace in the Wu branch with Qing Yang conjunct — a blade at the horse's head. A malefic in position becomes a fine weapon: fighting spirit roused, distinction won at the frontier.

Stars involved:Tian Tong

🔑 How It Forms

The Life Palace lies in the Wu branch, and Tian Tong and Qing Yang both sit inside the Life Palace. All three elements together form the pattern. The heavenly stem of the birth year is not checked separately — the judging note below explains why.

📜 Classical Verse

A blade at the horse's head: guarding the frontier.

—— The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu

📖 In Depth

Qing Yang is a malefic and is usually read as damage, but landing at Wu, a fire-strong horse position, the edge is quenched in flame and becomes an arrowhead for the charge — the system's classic case of a malefic in the right position turning useful. The finest layer of it is that this pattern often pairs with softer stars such as Tian Tong and Tai Yin: a gentle star pricked by an arrow loses its inertia entirely and the fighting spirit comes fully open, so that a whole life gets rewritten by a single provocation. The ancients granted it merit at the frontier, which is to say it excels at winning where the conditions are hard and the opposition real.

How it is derived
  1. 1

Locate the Life Palace (branch Wu) as the basis for judgement.

  2. 2

This pattern requires the palace to sit at Wu; the Life Palace is at Wu — condition met.

  3. 3

Looking for Tian Tong and Qing Yang in the Life Palace: all required stars are present.

  4. 4

All 2 conditions above are met, so the pattern forms.

  5. 5

Finally the tier: no malefics or Hua Ji disturb the trinity of the Life Palace, so the pattern stands at full strength.

Result: the pattern forms at full strength

💡 What matters in this judgement

Nearly every pattern in this system treats Qing Yang as a destructive factor; this one puts it to work the other way round, so the detector checks three things — whether the Life Palace is at Wu, whether Tian Tong sits there, and whether Qing Yang shares that same palace. Among the twelve branches Wu belongs to fire and was anciently called the horse position, governing the gallop. Tian Tong is the fortune star and leans toward ease, which is exactly why it needs this arrow to rouse it: a malefic landing here has its edge tempered as if by fierce fire, turning from something that wounds into something that opens a road — the textbook case of a malefic finding its place and becoming useful. The birth-year stem is not listed as a separate condition because, under this site's star-placement method, Qing Yang enters Wu only in years whose heavenly stem is Bing or Wu. The stem is already implied by Qing Yang sitting at Wu, so testing it again would be redundant. Note that the palace is a hard condition here: move that same Qing Yang to another palace and it reads as a malefic once more, and this pattern no longer applies. Its dividend is the drive that pressure draws out; its price is toil and collision, so health and safety precautions have to keep pace. Once the arrow is on the string, direction matters more than force.

🎯 Readings by Topic

Career

The military and police, overseas postings, frontier development, the front line of a competitive industry. Comfort buries this pattern; the harder the fight, the better it shows.

Wealth

Money comes from struggle, and opportunities in distant or difficult places are best of all. Waiting to be assigned earns nothing — volunteer for the campaign.

Relationships

A strong, direct personality that needs a partner who admires the edge. Long absences are a common shape here.

⚠️ When It Breaks

Outside the Wu palace, Qing Yang is still read as a malefic and this pattern does not apply. A life of hard work with some injury along the way is the price, so keep the health checks and the safety gear. The arrow is already on the string, and direction now matters more than force.
