Ling Tan (Bell-Greed)
Tan Lang with Ling Xing in the same palace or meeting it — a slow, smothered fire that burns a long time before it breaks out. Twin to Huo Tan (Fire-Greed), but deeper-rooted and easier to keep.
🔑 How It Forms
Tan Lang and Ling Xing both sit in the Life Palace itself, in the same palace (in the same palace = falling inside one and the same palace) — that is the standard route. Or both stars fall inside the Life Palace's trinity (the palace itself + the opposite palace + the two trine palaces, four in all) and are met across it — the secondary route. Both routes require Tan Lang and Ling Xing to reach thriving or in temple in brightness (brightness is a star's power grade in the palace it occupies; the seven steps run from strong to weak as in temple, thriving, in place, favorable, neutral, weak, fallen). Satisfying either one forms the pattern.

🔬 A Worked Example, Step by Step
The chart below is cast by our own engine, and the steps come from the pattern detector in that same pass — the explanation is the judgement, not a separate write-up.
- 1
Locate the Life Palace (branch Wu) as the basis for judgement.
- 2
Looking for Tan Lang and Ling Xing in the Life Palace: all required stars are present.
- 3
Checking brightness: Tan Lang thriving and Ling Xing in temple — meets the requirement.
- 4
Looking for Tan Lang and Ling Xing across the trinity of the Life Palace: all required stars are present.
- 5
Checking brightness: Tan Lang thriving and Ling Xing in temple — meets the requirement.
- 6
This pattern can form along 2 different routes; this chart satisfies 2 of them, so it forms — the unmet route above is simply the other path, not a failure.
- 7
Finally the tier: no malefics or Hua Ji disturb the trinity of the Life Palace, so the pattern stands at full strength.
✓ Result: the pattern forms at full strength
Ling Tan (Bell-Greed) and Huo Tan (Fire-Greed) are the same structure with a different fuse fitted: Tan Lang does the accumulating of contacts and chances, Huo Xing or Ling Xing does the igniting, so the test logic is perfectly symmetrical, with Huo Xing simply swapped for Ling Xing. The two fire stars differ in temperament — Huo Xing is open flame, quick to come and quick to go; Ling Xing is a banked, smothered fire, long in the building and rooted when it breaks out — so the same verdict of pattern formed runs on a longer clock for Ling Tan. The detector requires both stars at thriving or in temple because this pattern lives on accumulated quantity: a weak Tan Lang leaves no timber to light, a weak Ling Xing cannot light it, and if either end falls short the build-up never becomes a burst. Both routes are accepted — the same palace puts timber and flame in contact, while the trinity lights it across a gap, weaker in force but structurally sound.
🎯 Readings by Topic
Deep work in unglamorous territory: research and development, craft, vertical markets. Trade time for the eventual eruption; chasing trends throws away the pattern's own momentum.
Wealth built up slowly and released at once. Windfalls tend to look like assets held so long they suddenly reprice — holding power is earning power here.
Feelings warm slowly and run deep, love grown over years. Once committed the focus is total; the danger is affection kept so quiet the other person never registers it.
⚠️ When It Breaks
Ling Xing fallen or Tan Lang out of temple stores heat that never ignites. Struck by the Void stars or Hua Ji, years of patient waiting can come to nothing — the cruelest outcome of all. During the waiting years, do not keep switching tracks: every move resets the clock.
