Tai Yang sits in the Life Palace itself with brightness at thriving or in temple (brightness is a star's power grade in the palace it occupies; in temple is the strongest, thriving the next). Then look through the Life Palace's trinity (the palace itself + the opposite palace + the two trine palaces, four in all) for Lu — either the star Lu Cun appears, or Tai Yang itself carries the birth-year Hua Lu (Hua Lu = the mark of income that the heavenly stem of the birth year stamps onto a star; this pattern recognizes only the version stamped on Tai Yang). Both conditions met together form the pattern.

Tai Yang's standing weakness is that it gives its light away and keeps little on its own books, and this pattern repairs exactly that gap, which is why the test splits into bright enough and Lu present. The first step measures only the brightness of Tai Yang in the Life Palace itself and does not pin the branch — Tai Yang is naturally strong at Si, Wu, Mao and Chen, and measuring the brightness directly is more accurate than listing branches. The two routes in the second step must be kept apart: Lu Cun is a physical star whose position is set by the heavenly stem of the birth year, and it counts in any of the four palaces of the trinity; the Hua Lu route, however, is restricted to Tai Yang's own Hua Lu, with Hua Lu on any other star not counting, because this pattern is about the star of name acquiring the ability to convert — the Lu has to land on Tai Yang for the golden crow to be carrying treasure.
