Upper Structure

Heaven-plate Geng over earth-plate Ren: the metal of Tai Bai sinks into the great waters of the Heavenly Snare and loses all bearing. It signals travelers losing their way, lovers' letters going unanswered, and plans dragging on without result — the ruling images are lost contact and lost direction.

Formation

Heaven plate Geng + Earth plate Ren

In Depth

Geng is the baleful metal of Tai Bai; Ren is the water of the Heavenly Snare. With heaven-plate Geng over earth-plate Ren, metal qi drains away into deep water — a sharp blade sinking into a river, its force spent — a pattern called Shang Ge, the Upper Structure. It forms through drainage without control: when Geng metal meets Ren water, metal generates water and its qi leaks away; the malice is not removed, yet the sense of direction is already scrambled — hence disorientation, blockage, and severed communication. The classical judgments, losing one's way on a distant journey and no word passing between man and woman, center on two images, lost contact and lost bearings: the traveler loses direction on the road, and the matter loses its thread midway. The harm of this pattern lies not in violent impact but in draining delay: plans hang unresolved, travelers stay long away without returning, letters go long undelivered. Its severity is a shade milder than the White Tiger Offending Structure, but it grinds people down. Read the host palace: in the Kan Palace, where water flourishes, the disorientation deepens; in the Gen Palace, earth checks water, and the blockage carries a way out. With the three auspicious doors, lost contact tends to be temporary; with inauspicious doors, the silence stretches on. Falling into emptiness signals false messages and dead-end addresses. For questions about missing persons, lost objects, awaited news, or distant travel, first judge that no trace will surface for a while, then work from the host palace's direction to track the whereabouts. For undertakings, pause the push and straighten out the lines of contact and the route first — until the direction is clear, every effort spent is effort wasted.

Readings by Topic

Career

Job applications mostly vanish without echo, and interviews are followed by long silence. For those in office, projects lose direction, requests and reports stall layer by layer, and news is garbled by the time it reaches you. Actively confirm information through several channels rather than waiting passively on one line.

Wealth

Wealth-seeking loses its way: investment targets are opaque, and funds in transit take forever to arrive. Money lent out is hard to recover, and the debtor's whereabouts shift constantly. Put nothing into ventures whose fundamentals you cannot see; for existing investments, get the statements and receipts in order first.

Relationships

Love shows silence and cooling: replies come slowly, intentions are hard to read, and long-distance relationships suffer most — no word passing between them is precisely this pattern. Pressing and interrogating only stiffens the standoff. Keep one steady line of contact open, allow each other breathing room, and go deeper once the configuration shifts.

Health

Symptoms resist diagnosis; consultations at one clinic after another reach no conclusion. The correspondences are the kidneys, bladder, fluid metabolism, and clouded, drowsy spirits. Commit to one major hospital for systematic testing rather than bouncing between scattered folk remedies until the illness becomes a maze.

Travel

Travel brings wrong turns, missed connections, and interrupted itineraries — navigation failing, exits missed, a stream of small mishaps, and in serious cases the traveler losing contact altogether. Before a long trip, leave clear word of your route, lodging, and emergency contacts; keep communications open en route, and take no shortcuts or night roads.

Disputes & Lawsuits

The case bogs down: key witnesses are unreachable, filings sink without reply, and procedure drags round after round — the party who initiates gains no traction. Shore up the fundamentals first: service addresses and chains of evidence. Make sure the person can be found and the papers can be served before anything else.
